History of Sensoji Temple. 浅草寺の歴史

Sensoji Temple is a temple located in Asakusa, Taito-ku, Tokyo, built 1400 years ago.
It is the oldest temple in Tokyo.
Its origin dates back to the Asuka era. When a brother was fishing on the Sumida River, a small Buddha statue caught on the net.
They learned that the Buddha image is “Kanzeon Bodhisattva”.
Their teacher, “hajinonakatomo,” turned his house into a temple and worshiped Buddha statues.
After that, Sensoji Temple was destroyed by a major earthquake, but the relationship with the Sumida River often remains as an episode, such as transporting felled timber to the Sumida River and rebuilding it.

浅草寺は、東京都台東区浅草にある1400年もの歴史のあるお寺です。
東京都内では、最も古いお寺です。
起源は飛鳥時代にもさかのぼり、投縄漁をしていた兄弟が隅田川で小さな仏像が網にかかったところから始まります。釣り上げた仏像が「観世音菩薩」であることを知り、この兄弟の主人であった土師中知（はじのなかとも）が自分の家をお寺にして、観音像の供養を行いました。その後、大地震によって浅草寺は倒壊しますが、復興のために伐採した木材を隅田川に流して運ぶなど、隅田川との関係性が度々エピソードとして残っています。

It is also famous that Ieyasu Tokugawa made Sensoji a place for prayer.
徳川家康が浅草寺を祈願所にしたことも有名です。

There are “Kaminarimon”, “Nakamise”, “Hozomon”, “Hondo”, “Gojunoto”, “Nitenmon”, “Asakusajinja” and “Denboin” on the grounds.
Sensoji Temple is a very popular spot for travelers from other countries.

境内には、雷門（かみなりもん）、仲見世（なかみせ）、宝蔵門（ほうぞうもん）、本堂（ほんどう）、五重塔（ごじゅうのとう）、二天門（にてんもん）、浅草神社（あさくさじんじゃ）、伝法院（でんぼういん）などがあります。
浅草寺は、「観音霊場」でもあり、東京都内では唯一の「坂東三十三箇所」の札所です。また、「江戸三十三箇所観音霊場」の（１番）札所です。海外からの観光客にも大変人気のスポットです。
